British Values

Promoting British Values at All Saints Primary School.

The DfE has recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At All Saints Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

All Saints’ is a school committed to Restorative Justice, it is a key theme of our Behaviour Policy. Each year children in each class decide upon their behaviour charter and sign up to a home school agreement to agree to support our rules. Elections are held annually and children from year 1 to 6 vote their classmates onto the School Council. This is one of the ways we engage with our children to ensure that their voices are heard. Children regular engage in pupil voice activities and pupil questionnaires and we ensure that we respond to their feedback.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, either school based or of the country are reinforced at all times at All Saints.

Our Behaviour Policy sets clear expectations for behaviour in all aspects of school life. The restorative element of our policy ensures that children see the impact that anti-social behaviour has on others and learn from their mistakes. Children are taught the reason and value behind rules and law and understand that poor behaviour results in a consequence.

Equally, we reward the positive through our Reward Shop, certificates and prizes.

We welcome visitors from such organisations as the Fire service, the Police & the School Nurse who further reinforce our messages.

Individual Liberty

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make positive choices in a safe and supportive environment. Our children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and how to exercise these safely. Our restorative approach enables our children to understand their own and others liberties because it is very effective in changing the behaviour of those who have harmed others. Punishment on its own is not an effective way of getting people to understand the effects of their behaviour on other people. The basic Ethos of the Restorative Approach is to:

• Ensure that people have the chance to understand the harm that they done to others.
• Give people who have been caused harm the right to share the impact that this has had.
• Give the people who have caused harm the right to put things right.

Mutual Respect

This is the central theme to everything that we do, all of our relationships, whether between children or adults are always respectful. We actively encourage this through the way that we speak to each other from the moment that the children arrive in the morning. Adults model this for the children in the way that they speak to each other also.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths & Beliefs

All Saints’ diversity and harmonious community is our great strength. Our children respect their own identities, faiths and beliefs sharing their own knowledge. Children no matter their background, religion or faith come together in school to understand others better.

We have a planned cycle of celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Religious Education, PHSCE and SRE all promote the message of tolerance and respect for others. Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within their classes and the school.

At All Saints we will actively challenge children, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views.
